I recently got this email from someone who had attended a keynote I gave in January 2010, so one year ago. Extreme life changes are possible! I asked the attendees to fast forward one year (to 2011) and think about one thing they wanted to have already changed. Two attendees took this to heart apparently and made spectacular moves. Will you be writing a letter like this about your own spectacular 2011?
Last Thursday was the 1st anniversary of our wonderful charity fundraiser in 2010. Gabrielle and I obviously took on board everything you said that day about conquering fear: she got married for the 1st time 3 weeks ago, aged [40+], after a whirlwind romance with an old friend; I moved my family to [Europe] in August to live near my Mom (an 80 year old non-driver, alone since Dad died in 2009) and am running my own NY law firm from a home office 3,500 miles away from the Big Apple!
My target clients are old colleagues and business associates, i.e. attorneys in the Metro area who are involved commercial real estate, commercial lending and commercial loan workout and foreclosure. I provide transaction support to them on a contract basis. I am targeting their overflow work during peak times and their temporary staffing needs to cover family medical leave etc. When people ask me who would be a good referral, I say any of your transactional attorney friends who work every Saturday and Sunday and are reachable all the time from their vacation destinations; I don’t need to tell you about the appalling lack of work-life balance pandemic among NYC attorneys!
The money is trickling in but the job satisfaction is just overflowing. I can hear the relief in client’s voices when I take on a project .. they pay me for the work that I do but don’t have to worry about a permanent expense base nor the qualifications of a stranger sent by a staffing agency. I feel so free and unconstrained and my family is immensely happier than this time last year. The children (7 1/2, 6 and 3 1/2) love the relative freedom of living in the countryside in the middle of a bunch of farms. Chris [spouse] has finally realized his dream of getting up in the morning and chopping wood for the fire (mind you, he thought he would be doing that in the Adirondacks). My Mom is much happier too .. she was managing just fine but not really enjoying life; now that we are 3 miles away and popping in an out every day, there is a new quality to her days.
You are one of a number of people who inspired me to make this change. Thank you very much for that Caroline.
All the best for 2011, Carmel
